This month’s curry club came around with the minimum of build-up. Curry House doesn’t have much of a reputation and it was with less excitement, more trepidation that the curry clubbers approached this restaurant, possibly fearing the worst. Instead, what we found was a little gem.
With a name like ‘Curry House’, you get the picture. It’s an old fashioned place, in fact established in 1971. The menu is of course full of British curry house staples but there are touches of flair within the pages. There’s certainly a wide range to choose from.
To start, I had Achanak Chicken. Thinly cut spicy chicken, stuffed into a pepper. I’ve never seen this before, it doesn’t exactly look refined but it was really tasty, hearty food.
The main course I chose was Hot Chilli Prawns. Another unusual one; a tomato-ey, Balti-like curry with a great vindaloo-plus kick! It could’ve been tailor-made for me. I loved it!
Perhaps there wasn’t a huge weight of expectation on Curry House but we were all pleasantly surprised. They’ve been doing this for over 40 years and if you’re looking for the real British curry house experience, this is it. This place may even be a surprise contender for our curry house of the year award!

MAIN:

Very tasty garlic chilli masala and lamb tikka was very tender. Garlic was not too overpowering like some of the curry dishes you can find. Pilau rice not the usual standard either, tons of flavour. The Mixed Grill looked very impressive .

The surroundings are ‘retro’, which is fine but some Indian music would have been nice.

The service was quite attentive and friendly in a non-intrusive way.

VALUE:
|
The value at (£27 per head) was pretty good, given that we ordered quite a lot of food and drink. Even so, a banquet option on a Wednesday night, rather than the designated Thursday night would have been good!
