Vote London South for Curry Capital!

25 September 2013

The chance to vote for the Curry Capital of Britain is almost up - and of course, we’re waving the flag for London South!

The Curry Capital of Britain was first created in 1999 with the intention of highlighting the benefits of multiracial communities as well as promoting the curry industry and helping to alleviate unemployment and promote community cohesion.  So it's great for the city in question to win.

I guess because of its size, the organisers decided to break London up into ‘North’, ‘South’, ‘East’, ‘West’ and ‘Central’ and last year  London South  came a respectable 9th.

The Councils that make up London South’s bidding team are Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Greenwich, Lewisham, Merton, Richmond, Kingston and Sutton.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to find statistics specifically for South London, especially the eight councils that are participating but of course London is one of the most multicultural cities in the world.  11.3% of London’s population is from the Indian subcontinent.

Probably more surprisingly, 4.8% of Bromley's population are of an Asian background

The restaurants chosen to represent London South are;

It’s great to have Cinnamon Culture representing Bromley.  As we have mentioned many times before, Bromley has more curry houses per capita than anywhere in the country so we feel it definitely deserves some recognition.

Shampan 2,  Sonargaon,  Tamasha  and  Village Cuisine are just a few other top Bromley curry houses that could have easily represented the area.

Trip Advisor list almost 1000 curry restaurants in London but traditionally, this competition is dominated by Bradford and Glasgow.  The fact that we’re just one of 5 candidates from the same city means London South is a huge underdog.  If we even came close to winning this it would be a huge achievement, so please vote for London South here: http://www.currycapitalofbritain.org.uk/vote/

Voting closes Friday 27th September.
