Wild Mango, Beckenham

Wednesday 11th December 2013

The final curry club meeting of 2013 was at Wild Mango in Beckenham. This was previously the site of another Indian restaurant ‘Café Royal’, which never had a particularly good reputation.  Wild Mango sets its sights much higher.

The facade looks colourful and invitingly exotic and upon entering you notice the stylish modern décor.

Palok Kebab was an unusual option for starter.  Spinach & potatoes, stuffed with cottage cheese and roasted cashew, right up my street and definitely recommended.  For main course, I wanted to satisfy my chilli addiction and went for Naga Chicken ‘spiced up’ to vindaloo heat.  It was a scorcher!  Full of flavour despite the heat but it is definitely one for the chilli heads!

This vibrant and stylish restaurant is more than just a tarted up curry house.  The menu is fresh and interesting and the food and service were great.  Thumbs up!

     MENU
Wild Mango

     MAIN:
Naga Chicken was very tasty and really spicy!  Lamb Tikka also scored well.  Garlic Chilli Masala was good if a little heavy.  The portions were all generously sized.

 STARTERS/
    SIDES:
Starters were all well presented.  The king prawn butterfly was of a good size and very tasty.  The Duck Tikka was also enjoyable and The gobi motor is highly recommended.
  8/10
   VARIETY:
The menu is fairly modern and unfussy.  A good choice of new dishes and reimagined classics.  There were a number of interesting dishes that I would’ve like to have tried.
  8/10
     HEAT:
‘Spiced up’ Naga Chicken was easily the hottest curry I’ve had this year!
   5/5
   DRINKS:
The usual curry lagers.  Decent choice of soft drinks.

   ATMOS:
A modern but cosy sort of restaurant. It was fairly quiet on the night and turning the music up a touch would have helped the atmosphere.
  15/20
   SERVICE:
Very friendly, knew their stuff.  No long waits or mistakes.
  8/10
   VALUE:
There was no midweek banquet option so the price was very slightly above average.
  6/10
  LOCATION:
Busy high street location.  Plenty of buses but parking nearby wasn’t easy.  There are plenty of places to drink nearby.
   4/5
   BONUS:
No complimentary drink was offered.

Booking Name: Stelios Papabeastos
Pubs:  There are countless bars and pubs in Beckenham but The Brick Layers Arms just Two doors along is a very good bet.
Highlight:  An exciting menu with lots of modern twists.
Lowlight:  Was a little quiet on midweek.
Verdict:  A top addition to the local curry scene
