Rajdoot Tandoori, Petts Wood

Tuesday 23rd October 2012

Petts Wood was the destination, as we reviewed this long established restaurant.  I had a good feeling about Rajdoot from its classic curry house appearance. The window frames are shaped like the domes of the Taj Mahal, it has a glowing retro sign and steamed up windows. The façade really shouts ‘old school’!

On entering, you notice that almost all the tables are set in booths, which gives it quite an intimate feel. While the authentic Indian décor and upbeat bangra music give the place a lively but relaxed vibe. The menu features the British curry house classics as you’d expect but there are a number of surprises including ‘Jungle Curry’ which is described as;  “Whatever the chef can catch in the jungle that day. At least you know it's fresh...".  Part of me really wishes I’d tried this.

Chicken Raj Traves (sp?!)

To start, I had mixed kebab.  Juicy, chunks of well spiced meat.  Generous portions,  proper man food and very satisfying!

For main course, I asked the waiter to recommend something hot.  He suggested I try chicken raj traves (not sure about the spelling!),  a hot and spicy but well flavoured dish.  All the kick of a vindaloo but richer and with more flavour.  It was a ‘special’ dish, not on the menu and certainly a new one on me.

There were some great, rarely seen sundries.  All sorts of different rice and bread choices, including chicken tikka bread.  I went for cheese and chilli naan bread which was great.

This type of restaurant that is becoming all too rare these days.  Great food but with a fun, un-pretentious atmosphere.
