The Papadom, Bickley

Wednesday 5th June 2013

.
Though reasonably close to the town centre,  Bickley isn't an area of Bromley that is especially familiar to most of the club and few of us were even aware of this restaurant, so this was definitely uncharted territory.

The building is quite unusual.  It appears to be a large converted house surrounded by an ornate iron fence and gate.  Inside, the décor is modern with snazzy purple lighting and a fish tank in the centre!  The fact that it is basically the front room of a house means it feels pretty cozy but the nightclub lights and upbeat bangra music give it a lively atmosphere.

We kicked off with two papadoms each, served with four typical accompaniments.  Special mention for the lime pickle though.  This rich and citrusy chutney tasted home-made rather than the Pataks type version usually served up.

Mixed bag with the starters.  The chicken tikka looked very ‘well done’ and though they were crispy and smokey, they did end up being quite dry.  But the real issue was the Lamb samosas.  As Murali cut them open, he found a long black hair in one.  Now this raises an interesting issue, it may have nothing to do with the restaurant.  Do they even make their own samosas?  If not, they probably should and either way it was unacceptable for a restaurant of Papadom's calibre.  I’m not queasy but you can’t help but be put off when this happens.  They have to lose major points here!

For main course, I went for Naga chicken, a fiery dish with chunks of chicken tikka and a strong chilli flavour.  It had plenty of chilli peppers thrown in, including the seeds so there were some inevitable after affects!  This is a must for all chilli addicts though - very satisfying.

Overall, it was an enjoyable evening and The Papadom is a very good restaurant.  It’s just a shame that there were a few issues that put a bit of dampener on it.

                                  THE PAPADOM

     MAIN:
King Prawn Jalfrezi went down well.  There was good texture to the prawns and the sauce was well-spiced.  Decent sized portion.

We were kept waiting a little at times and dishes were not always all brought out together but on the whole the service was competent and they were certainly very friendly.

At £28 a head including service, the value was slightly pricey but the quality of the food - for the most part - justified the prices.

Booking Name:  Seamus O’Beast
Pubs:  None that I’m aware of.
Highlight:  The lively upbeat atmosphere.  I would imagine it’s buzzing on a Friday night.
Lowlight:  Has to be the samosa with a toupée.
Verdict:  On another night, they may have scored better but ‘hair-gate’ cost them dearly!
